THE ANC has announced its mayoral candidates contesting this year’s municipal elections except for Tshwane where a decision could not be reached.
Secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said Gauteng was not happy with the three names submitted for consideration
A delegation would go to Tshwane on Sunday to consult the party’s structures in the region.
Mantashe said three names were tabled for Tshwane, however two names were now being discussed.
“We pulled out the third one. I won’t venture into who those people are until we have decided,” he said.
The regional executive committee and branches would be engaged so that everyone supported the candidate decided on.
It was understood that current mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa would not return to his position.
This year’s local government election is expected to be the fight for the country’s metros.
This is the first time the ANC is making the names of its mayoral candidates public.
Mantashe also announced that Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau would return as the party’s candidate while Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Mzwandile Masina would be the Ekurhuleni candidate. This meant that current mayor Mondli Gungubele would not return.
In Nelson Mandela Bay current mayor Danny Jordaan would remain the candidate
In Mangaung, Olly Mlameli will replace current mayor Thabo Manyoni.
The Cape Town mayoral candidate is Xolani Sotashe, in eThekwini Zandile Gumede and Buffalo City Xola Pakati.
