The African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng Province welcomes the rise of our province into the number one position nationally following the release of the 2018 National Senior Certificate examination (matric) results by the Basic Education Department.

The sterling performance by the Class of 2018 and the entire education fraternity in the province under the stewardship of the MEC for Education Comrade Panyaza Lesufi, is a tale of persistence, sacrifice and visionary leadership.

We could not be more proud of this outcome which confirms that the goal that the ANCGP set itself five years ago to transform and modernise our education system through decisive interventions is bearing fruits.

This has resulted in the province attaining a 2.8% improvement on its previous results to achieve 87.9% in 2018, propelling it to the number one spot with an unprecedented eight out of ten top performing districts being from Gauteng.

We further welcome the fact that according to the Minister or Education, “Gauteng has raised the bar in almost all applicable performance indicators.” We can only build on this solid foundation to further ensure that indeed education becomes a potent tool to address the socio economic challenges that continue to confront our province and to ensure that the legacy of inequality bequeathed by the apartheid regime through inferior education is reversed.

We once again congratulate the class of 2018, and wish them well in their future endeavors.

  1. #MatricResults2018 Of the 1,067,075 South African children enrolled in Grade 10 in 2016 only 400,761 passed their NSC in Dec 2018 – just 24 months later. That leaves 666,314 South African children Missing In Action! How did we lose over half a million citizens in under 2 years?
